Saiga conversion question, RE: original hammer.

hey guys. I just picked up one of the $299.00 Saigas from J&G. I'm on a pretty tight budget so I'm trying to do the conversion as inexpensively as I can.

Can I re-use the hammer that came in the gun if I'm not going to re-install the BHO? Can it be re-used as is with no modification?

By my count I will be fine in regards to 922 (r) as I am going to replace the (1)trigger, (2)sear, (3)butt stock, and (4)hand guard.

I'm not going to re-install the BHO because I have read a few reports of it failing, and this is going to be built into an inexpensive carbine course rifle. I don't want it failing on me in a class.

Yes you can reuse the OEM hammer, but what $$ are you saving by doing so? You'll need to add in a spacer to take up the room or the hammer may start going side ti side and if your running a a single hook that could be an issue. You can notch the BHO to keep the spring from jumping the leg. Those are the only failures I've seen with the BHO.

So what I'm hearing is that I'm going to be better off just getting a regular non- modded G2 trigger group and going with that?
I'm just going to take the BHO out, if I want to be able to hold the bolt back in the future I will just notch the safety lever. I see the BHO as an unnecessary part that may fail in a training or SHTF situation.

I was the kid that took the chain guard, front brake, and all the reflectors off the brand new BMX bike back in the day. Unnecessary stuff gets removed.

Yes, the only mod needed on the G2 hammer for saigas (223,762,545) is narrowing to allow for the BHO. You eliminate the BHO your able to run the G2 as is.

Sorry a little off topic, but did your Saiga come in with a weird rectangular roll mark on the right side of the receiver right above the trigger. I just got 3 of them in from J&G and it's the first thing I noticed.

The cross hatched eletro-pencil mark? Mine came with it, and have read all the new ones have that..

That will eventually go away once all the Saiga's that were marked for the Russian American Armory have been sold. that being said I have seen these being imported through Mercury Hermes (WTF kind of name is that?) and Legion USA

No it's covering the Russian American Armory import mark.

You heard wrong, Madriverarms is correct. If you blast that spot or hit it with a flap wheel you'll see Russian American Armory will come through.

                        Cool, thanks.
Eventually I'm going to want to replace the front sight with the threaded AK74 one and the gas block with one that i can put a cleaning rod it. Is that something your shop could do?

yeah, mine has it. I'm ok with it being on there 'cause the gun was only $299. I might be a little irritated if it was a $450 Saiga with it on there.
