Pesky AK FTE problems

Hello, read a couple other threads here on FTEs and other issues that could contribute to failures but can't quite iron out this weapon that's been a little beyotch for over a year and a half now.

I reckon this is a fairly typical FTE, where the spent casing gets hung up in the action every 2-3 rounds. Sometimes the casing will even get slammed by the bolt carrier into the outer side of the chamber, causing some pretty surprising damage to the front of the casing.

There does appear to be a dent on the tip of the ejector where it seems to be getting a bit dinged. But it's impossible to tell definitively whether or not this is the issue. Also I have no idea if its current shape is ideal or not.

Judging by research so far, it seems that the ejector may be a bit short. But any insight you guys might have based on these couple photos would be much appreciated.

Looks like a flat build from the MIG weld on the rail and the screw head, you nailed it, that peening of the ejector tells me it wasn't heat treated or the heat treating wasn't done correctly. Either way you can weld that and reshape and it should be fine.

I doubt its causing the fte, I have 2 ak pattern guns that wouldnt heat treat the same as 4140 after I used some rod to extend them. They peened a little then stopped, they both eject fine. His in the photo looks minimal.

I guess it couldnt hurt though...

Adding one more photo of the bolt sliding in with the ejector to see if that helps. Hard to tell if it's where it should be or not...

You want the ejecter out as far as possible without dragging on the bolt. That is excessive peening IMO, it's supposed to kick that case out with some vigor.

Length may be less of an issue than ejector tip angle. I'd be surprised if this was wear as much as a defect during assembly. The angle could promote the case ejecting into the top cover. The profile of the ejector should be square, yours appears to have a have a strong slope.

Angle of the ejector will definately affect where cases are sent flying. I had reason to play with the front angle of the ejector, I believe you need a 90 degree or better angle on the front face.

Also agree the peening looks excessive, may not have been properly heat treated.
