Unwanted threadlocker removal

Thanks to how-to's and instruction threads on this site, I assembled a beautiful DPMS AR with a Sharps lower, and a Yankee Hill free float.

I did everything flawlessly with the exception of putting the end piece on my free float. While squeezing the packet too much threadlocker got on the threads of the end piece, leaving an unwanted ring of threadlocker showing on the business end of my free float. What can I use to clean the threadlocker that is showing through the thread?

What kind of thread locker? Most loctite compounds will come off with acetone and/or a stiff bristle brush. That is, the stuff that is not cured.

Seems to be a generic threadlocker red that comes with Yankee Hill components. I'm sure by now it is fairly cured (over a week ago)

Yep, it's trash...

It doesnt get fully cured unless it is in an air free environment, like in screw threads. Hit it with a stiff nylon bristle brush and some acetone.

My feelings exactly! I must correct this or else!!! I will try the acetone/stiff brush thanks a lot

If you take off the parts that will not take heat above 300 deg F.
Put it in the oven for about 12 hours at 300 or higher. Most of the time this will work. You can go as low as 180 deg F for 48 hour and this may work. I only use loctite on a few screws were I can use heat. I also have had to remove loctite others and it some times take hours to undo.

Thanks for the input Dave, I don't need to disassemble; I only need to remove unwanted exposed threadlocker because of my uncareful assembly I will be in Carson this weekend and attempt the acetone removal method. Hopefully my other uninformed attempts didn't create any removal of the parkerization on the free float

What flavor of loctite??? Blue, Red,...?? Just break it down, clean up the loctite, and re-assemble.
And have an adult supervise the threadlock application on the second try.

Seriously, what type threadlocker? It makes a difference on how you go about taking it apart.

It's alright Ken, that's the way I took it i.e. the sarcastic smilie; I have pretty thick skin. Anyway I think I'm going to simply remove the excess on the end of my free float and not fully disassemble. I think I should never need to remove that end piece anyway. I just thought it would be a good idea to make it permanent since I can probably take it off with my compensator in place (I got the bull barrel endpiece since I plan to upgrade my barrel and trigger at a later date).
