    Remington Long Action Question?????

Hey guys, I tried posting this in the centerfire rifle section but it might be more appropriate here.

I want to buy a Remington long action from brownells to use in a 300 win mag build. Brownells is selling Remington 700 short actions, long actions, short action mags and long action mags. I was always under the impression that a standard long action can run a 300 win mag. OK so my question is.... Will the Remington 700 long action listed below (part number 767-000-866) on brownells work for a 300 win mag build or do i need to get the long action magnum that is out of stock? Once i buy the action i plan on sending it to either ga precision or hart to blueprint the action and install a nice heavy match barrel.
    Thanks Guys

I did not look at the part number provided.

Long action mag should be what you want. The "Mag" refers to bolt face.

      Thanks Swifty.

Do you know how hard it is to replace a standard bolt face with a mag bolt face? I really want to just buy a rem 700 long action without having to buy an entire rifle. I just dont like the idea of buying a complete rifle when all i want is the action. So far brownells is the only place i have found remington 700 bolt action receivers for sale. And they only have long action and short action mags left. If i bought the long action would it be hard to open up or replace the bolt face to fit a 300 win mag?

      Thanks again

      Respectfully

      JB

The one you have listed will not work. It is a "standard" and has a .473' bolt face. The one you want has a .535" bolt face and possibly some differences in the feed rails that are integral with the receiver. (part number 767-000-867) Looks like they might be out of them. Worth a call to them to see if they may have one.

Look around for a used magnum 700 and strip the action out of it. Probably get one for same or less than a new action.

OR, get the long standard and get a new .535" bolt from Pacific Tool & Gauge. May have issues with the feed rails, maybe not. Dont have one to compare right now. Feed rails are a tricky thing. I had a cutter made to alter some rails on a 223 700 (converting to 7.62x39 Lapua) but dont have the cajones to do it just yet. Once they are cut there is no going back.
