    Garand Stock Question

I have a question regard one of my Garands. The stock looks like it kinda dry.(sorry can't seem to describe it better) What would be the easiest way to freshing her up? Linseed? Tung oil? I am pressed for time. This stock is already dark but looks dry and rough. Thanks for any quick fixes.

I read that CMP page, and I have some issues with their recommendations in #8 about freshening "chalky wood".

I wouldn't use any of the "tung oil finishes" that they list because all of these are mostly varnish. They have very little tung oil in them. And once you seal it with varnish, it won't aborb anything else......

If you can't find pure tung oil, the next best thing would be what the SA used when they were made-boiled linseed oil. SA started out using tung oil, but during WWII supplies ran short, so they switched to boiled linseed oil.

Hand rub a coat of either into the wood every chance you get and it will refresh to original condition. The old saying goes:
once a day for a week
once a week for a month
once a month for a year
once a year for a lifetime

Linseed works good. I put it on the wood in boats, it keeps it fresh.

The current S.A. uses linseed oil if they run into a situation on a stock.

As stated BLO "Boiled Linseed Oil" or Real Tung oil. I find that BLO is easier to use.

BLO is a great way to bring a stock back to life and protect it for a lifetime of use.
Lowes & Home Depot have the BLO by the quart / gallon for cheap. Remember to leave any rags you use spread out on concrete outside to dry before you toss them in the trash. The rags will catch fire if left crumpled up or in a big pile.
