    Gun refinishing?

Well I did something genious the other day and got a chemical on the top of the reciever of my remington 870 and it took the finish of a small inch sized area right on top. The finish is the black Parkarized finish I guess? What can I do to fix it?

Also I have a 2 tone 1911 and If I wanted it all black, parkarized or whatever, what would I have to do? Do they make kits to do finishes yourself? Gun finishes are new to me. I have plenty of experience with automotive finishes and painting, but plating and gun finishes is new to me.

There are gun finishes that people will do themselves, like durakote or cerakote.

You can reblue a gun pretty easily as well with the right compounds. You can buy self serve parkerizing kits, but they are expensive, you'd be better off getting it finished at a gunsmith.

Parkerizing/Bluing is fairly simple. But for the amount of money you'd invest for the right equipment and supplies, it wouldn't be worth it for just one gun.

If it was me, I'd either hit is with some krylon (camo) or just take it outdoors and drag it around in the dirt ... give it some character. It's a gun. Shoot it.

      But that's just me.

Im not sure a chemical would take parkerizing off? If its blued easy touch up, parkerizing will be more involved but you could slip in on an ak build party and park it.

The chemical was a nasty paint gun cleaner/stripper and took the black finish of my 870 right off. I do shoot the hell out of my guns by the way lol. There is no such thing as a safe queen in my world, but still I like to take care of my stuff. Where can I get these kits?

I can appreciate that. But then, I'm the kinda guy who washes his car ... when it rains.

I'm familiar with Brownells; they sell quality products and have great customer service. Here's a link to a full blown parkerizing system ... just as a comparison to a kit. Here's a link to one of Brownells benchtop kits. Both pages offer a decent explaination of what's involved. And here are a couple of other sources to check out: Calvan and ShooterSolutions, but I don't have any experience with them.
