is there a easily found epoxy or something like jb weld that i can use to put over grinded down welds and deep scratches to remove them before paint? i remember reading about a guy that was welding parts on his ak bolt and gas block and used a liquid metal of some sort to smooth it out. any help would be appreciated.

You can grind down JB Weld and it looks like metal but I would be wary of it cracking or falling off over time with repeated use on a firearm. If you've got a welder anyway it's best to weld up the scratches and pits then grind and polish. If it's something like just cosmetically covering up the spot welds on an AK receiver you can just hit them with the wire wheel, sandblast and then parkerize - then paint over the park and I doubt you'd notice the welds. -
I just got finished using some liquid metal filler on one of my guns. I welded the front sight to the gas block and wanted to smooth it out. It works fine. I have even had stuff chrome plated using it and it's been 10 years now and it never came off.sigpic
