How to remove these pits?

I'm going to refinish this rifle, and want to know how to get these pits out? I've tried steel wool, but it didn't work. Maybe a real fine wet sandpaper?

To remove pits, you have to sand all the metal around it down to the level of the deepest pit. Do you want to remove that much metal for looks? That looks like a round barrel, the correct way would be to spin it in a lathe and sand it with decending grades of sandpaper. If your going to try and blue it, its very important to not sand a flat or wavy spots in it as it will be very visable. Thats why turning it in a lathe and sanding the entire outside evenly is key. If your going to just park it for protection, have it sand blasted with a coarse media and it will probably not be noticable.

Actually the correct way to remove the pits is by draw-filing the barrel.
This proceedure removes metal along the length of the barrel and a low area blends in.
