    Cutting a barrel question

I want to cut a barrel down but it has a solid rib, without taking to have it done and without using a hacksaw what would be my best option? bandsaw, chop saw?

Both will work. Be sure to cut square and dress the muzzle after to remove any burrs.

If you had access to a water jet, you would probably have other better tools as well. Water jets are typically used for flat metals.
Make sure you cut a small 45 degree crown and clean up the cut and make it as square as you can. Since you are probably not threading the barrel it will look rough.you could use a steel chop saw to get the most straight cut but you will have to brace the barrel correctly to make it right. Most barrels are tapered so the cut may be an angle.

Is this a shotgun (solid rib)?
Either way, the best way is a lathe (I'm guessing you don't have).
next would be a cutoff wheel or chopsaw. Cut it about ⅛" long, then use a belt sander to square it up. Use a square to check your work. Then you can use a deburring tool to start the crown. If this is a shotgun, you're done. If it's a rifle, use a buttonhead socket screw in a drill with lapping compound to finish the crown. Tah dah! Poor man's crowning tool

Do not cut barrel shorter than 16 1/2"A few times a year some one need to have the barrel welded back. FYI do not weld barrels.

So if a government official ever measures your barrel you have 1/2" to spare depending where that guy measures from.

All ways give yourself some room.

The guy measures from the bolt face to the end of the barrel...that's just the way it's done.

No chop saw as I wouldn't want to heat up the barrel. Band saw then square it up in a mill.
