If you can even find a gunsmith that will perform just that operation - between all the high profit margin work he has lined up - you'll probably find between the wait and the price - in the long run it's better money spent to purchase a Harbor Freight Blast Cabinet & 50 lbs of Aluminum Oxide. Get the cabinet when it's on sale and combine that price w/ a HF 20% off coupon. You'll make a lot of friends w/ a bast cabinet and it'll quickly pay itself off.

Might check with local automotive machine shops. Many have bead blasting services.

          FWIW -

If you find an outside shop to bring it to, make sure they have a CLEAN blast cabinet & media.

Oil & Ethyl Glycol stays in Blast Cabinets, Media, and Media Dust used in Automotive applications.

80% of the finished product is the surface/substrate preparation.

Finishes like a clean, oil free substrate surface to hold on to.

Now if you're bead blasting JUST to attain a bead blasted finish - like on Stainless Steel - it doesn't matter if the cabinet has had automotive parts in it.

          HTH :-)

I'm in San Diego & have a blasting cabinet on premises. What do you need blasted? Remove existing finish or just prep surface for a new finish?

Thanks for all the replies. I have a S&W 4506 that the previous owner put a light polish on. I'd like to restore it to original finish which I understand to be a glass bead finish.
