Change ejecting rounds direction on AK?

So the AK74 I just finished is ejecting rounds at 90 degree angle about 15 yards and fast. I had to weld a bead on and shape it, so it has a bit of a crescent shape on the front.

My question is: if I file down the point, will it change the direction of ejecting rounds?

All other AKM and 74's I have built eject forward and right.

Upload of file is failing, hope the description was enough.

Hmm...not really sure on this one. When you say crescennt shaped, I think almost hooked(ish). It makes sense that it would contact the case differently, changing the ejection angle. I'd start by filing the ejector face parallel with the bolt face to remove captain hook, and see where that gets you. Worse comes to worse, you got a welder...get "creative".

Man I'd hate to be sitting at the bench next to you at the range *bang* "ow" *bang* "oww"

I have some that eject the same way you describe, and some that eject forward, and right. Some just fling that case as much as 20 feet to the right!
All of the ejectors are about the same.
I believe some of it is the strength of the extractor spring coupled with the speed of the cycle. Not sure if changing the ejector angle will be the solution you're looking for.
I do however recommend getting a screen to protect the guy(s) to your right at the range though.
My home range has screens you can hang between shooting stations for just this purpose.

For a given ammo, ejector shape, gas port size, recoild spring force, extractor spring force, diameter of bolt where the round seats are all areas that I would think of as having some influence from most likely to least likely. I would consider that a good challenge and would start with the easier to change variables like bolt (as long as head space is still good) and springs. This is where having a pile of AKs and parts comes in handy. Of course this isn't really a critical thing, more of a courtesy for the people shooting to your right. Then again that's where a lot of AR's dump their brass too so go figure

I forgot to add changing the gas tube to one that will bleed off the gas quicker could change the dynamics too. Something to chew on next time I go to the range...

It is ejecting 15 YARDS to the right at 90 degrees, not feet. So 45 feet away I am pelting this guys pimped out F250 and he is glaring at me. I smile, wave, say sorry and shift aim 10 feet to the left.

Did I mention that where I shoot there are no stalls, just concrete picnic tables 40 feet apart? =)

Trying upload again... HEY, it worky now. Approximation of shape currently on left, proposed shape right.

I dont know, I think I would leave it ejecting like that...kind of ,Cool. 74.s tend to fling those light weight steel cases pretty good anyways. Take a file to the range, and file till you get the desired ejection your looking for. Might improve some, but probably not that much. Love that drawing and google image

Another thing that would have an impact on ejection would be the distance from chamber to ejector face. Should be 2.2"
Can't hurt to take the hook off the ejector, and see if that helps
Also if it's throwing brass 45' to the right I would guess your system is over gassed.

Back from experimenting at the range. This is an Apex Bulgarian kit that showed zero signs of wear, all matching with a new barrel.

Was able to change the where the empties were ejecting along about a 40 degree angle, (20 degree +/- from 90) it is ejecting to 115 degrees about 15 feet up and over 30 feet.

I am going to measure the distance from chamber to face, I will probably throw a bead on it anyway since I was having too much fun pointing the empties...

I needed an excuse to make a heat sink for welding inside a finished receiver anyway...

It is fun, if you have the time and the wherewithall to do it, try spotting your empties just for kicks.

                      Also usefull if you reload.

I actually enjoy standing behind my girlfriend catching the flying brass when she shoots the m1 carbine.
