I am going to be ordering a muzzleloader build kit. It will be a Lyman .50 cal, Great plains Hawkens. I do mostly rebuilds and restorations of military and civilian. This rifle is going to be my own project. I have done cold blueing (Brownell's Oxpho-blu gel/liquid) and things have worked out great. On this type of rifle the barrel of that time was "brown." I have only looked at Brownell's and Midway catalogs so far and read a couple of reviews on some products. So, what is easy? What is best? I like to do things right the first time. Any suggestions would be a big help.

I'm too lazy to look for it right now and my internet connection is slow at home. So, I'll just recommend the browning solution that comes in a white plastic bottle with a yellow label on it. I used it on my first kit back in '87 and it works great. Just remember that you want as humid as an enviornment as possible (like a heated box with a pan of water in it) and the more applications, the better.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

Sounds like you are discribing "Laurel Mountain Forge Barrel Brown." If so, that is what I am favoring at this point. Do you or anyone have any experiance with browning and if so what did you use?I'm too lazy to look for it right now and my internet connection is slow at home. That's the stuff. I first used it in '87 to brown my first charcoal burner, a .54 LH TC Renegade Caplock kit which came all in white. At that time, the kit must have been at least 15 year old, new-old stock. IIRC, it does come with dirrections that are not hard to follow. I've got a couple old handguns kits around here that I need to work on. If you're local, maybe we could get together and set up a browning box when the time comes.Last edited by CSACANNONEER; 08-19-2011, 9:14 PM.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor
