Do e-clips really do anything?

Do these e-clips really do anything? I'm installing my trigger group on my AK and I feel like if I were to tap the axis pins they would come out anyway. Also the axis pin for my trigger pushes the e-clip away from the receiver wall. Is that supposed to happen? Because I can't get it to stay flat against the receiver while going around the hammer axis pin and the trigger axis pin. Is the e-clip really that important?

Yes, they keep the axis pins from walking out which could be very dangerous. That said, I'd toss the damn things and get a Redstar retaining plate instead.

That's what I'm using. But it won't hold my trigger axis pin in. Every time I push the axis pin fully in it pushes the clip away from the receiver wall... it seems like it would work if I could just put the pins in first and then the clip but there is a full closed circle for the safety selector switch and I can't get that in place while the trigger and disconnector are in. So how is this supposed to be done?

umm...wait...What?

The pins are supposed to go in first. It's a physical impossibility to put the plate on the pins before they're fully through the receiver.

Install the hammer and pin.
Then the trigger/disconnector assembly.
then slide the retainer plate into the receiver and onto the groove on the hammer axis pin.
Then rock it down onto the trigger axis pin groove.
Make sure the safety selector hole is lined up, and insert the safety to lock the plate in place.

You will end up with something that looks like this

OOOPS! I just realized that it is indeed possible to install the safety selector with the trigger group installed.... you just have to go backwards and bend it a little bit... yay!

oh wait...I think I get it now. You're having trouble installing the selector lever because it's hitting the disconnector when you try to rotate it down. correct?

If that's the case you can either rotate the selector counterclockwise over the rear trunnion rivets and selector stop. or cut a notch in the "paddle" on the selector to clear the disconnector. Just make sure to leave the rest of it long enough to contact the rear of the trigger. like this...

If that's the case you can either rotate the selector counterclockwise over the rear trunnion rivets and selector stop. or cut a notch in the "paddle" on the selector to clear the disconnector. Just make sure to leave the rest of it long enough to contact the rear of the trigger. like this...

Ummm... I'm back I just realized that I can't go backwards either. I guess the way the bulgy 74 rear trunnion is designed the rivet is just to close to the rotating axis o the selector for it to be bent out without being damaged... I guess I could try cutting a notch like you said. Guess I will have to try when I get home tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

E-clips are very important . I did a test fire on a build that was a Amd 65. This was a round up of US trigger parts. I was only lacking my retainer plate and had no such C clips. First issue jam after jam. I had a faulty mag. Well fixed that issue with another mag. pop pop brerrr pop pop berrr. The build was busting the issue was the hammer and trigger shifted because the axis pins moved and was not catching the lock on the hammer. I was not in a range but could have got me some unwanted attention long store short fixed the issue and never would make the mistake again . Make sure all your builds are put together correct before you test fire.

Try pulling on the trigger when you are rotating the safety down into place. That may give you enough clearance to get past the disconnector.
