There are two styles of rear receiver rings; 1) Round just like the front, and 2) With a radius similar to the Winchester M70 and Remington M700. Each style requires it's own mount.

Also check that you don't have the bases in the wrong place.

Also check that the bases are for your make and model of rifle.

There are bases made for some of the longer range rifles with off set in the mounts to compensated for lack of adjustments in some scopes at longer ranges. I saw this notes last night when I was searching for some bases for a Savage model 12 I need some bases and rings for.

Maybe you have a set of those type bases?

Copied from Leupolds site..... "Long Range STD™ mounts provide a 15-MOA slope of built-in elevation compensating for bullet drop at extreme ranges."

      So who made your mounts?

this all started out from checking the rings and mounts with a lapping kit(solid 1" bar). the mounts are for the rifle with rounded receiver and the receiver is rounded. i have contacted savage and leupold about this issue. the scope is a vxIII 4.5 x14 AO. i'm not about to cinch down this scope and have it get kinked or bent!!!! the mounts were pulled off and reciever checked the issue is in the receiver
