So my buddy has an old Ruger Mk I from 1972, it was not cleaned in 15 years, I convinced him to clean it. Found out why he never cleaned it, giant PITA to reassemble the first and second time.
Now that we got beyond that, I told him it is probably the same old spring in it that came from the factory, he wants to tune it up some. (recoil is much too sharp)
He decided he wanted a real tune up and re-blue at this point, we touched it up with some cold blue, but there are some definite signs of rust pitting and the blue is worn down.
So I have a couple questions for your consideration:
For the minor rust pitting, would walnut shell media be the best to take that off without giving the gun a blasted appearance?
Hot blue, what all do I need to get this done? Just a tank and the salts? (I have not hot blued before so any insight is appreciated)
For the tune up kit, just need springs? Or are there some parts that need to be replaced as well? This is a gun that is approaching 40, but it is still a great shooter, if a bit harsh in recoil.
