    Recrowning a .22

    Can a bolt action, heavy spiral hammer forged .22 with a hunter style crown (Marlin 60 style) in good condition be recrowned to this kind of heavily recessed, Russian Biathlon Basic crown shown below:



    without removing the barrel from the receiver? Also, what would be the minimum length of barrel that has to be cut off to undertake this recrown? Finally, how much would a gunsmith charge on average for such a recrown?

    Best way to recrown is in a lathe -- If the barrelled reciever can be fit through the headstock it is not a big job. Only enough material to clean up the old crown needs to be removed.
    It can possibly be done by hand if the brownell tools available cut the type of crown you want.

      Your answer is, "Yes." But the crown cutter from Brownells will cost about $50. Then you need the pilot and power driver thing (drill attachment) to make it happen. And if this is a good target gun your accuracy might be less than desired compared to original poor crown.
