Touching base, checking my thought process

Last year I put all the ak kits into locked storage, was having way to much fun with my ar's, and have done 5 or 6 (5 + helped 1 person) do various AMD's, Yugos, Romo (u/f and G), but all except the last 2 had original barrels. The two new barrel builds all of the FSB/GB/RSB fit and needed a press to set,. SO...

Anyways, I have a handful of ak-74 matching kits that I put aside and I decided to pull one of the kits, now I remember the main reason that I put them away. I purchased 5 barrels from one of the more popular vendors, along with 2 hammer forged german 5.45x39mm barrels. The barrels fit into the front trunion's as they should, the gas block and front site/comp assembly fits snug as well, however, the rear sight base can be pushed into place by hand, twisted around, etc, etc.

Since the barrels are going to be held in place by the barrel pin, what do you all think about such a loose RSB?. I've thought that maybe because the RSB will be held in place somewhat by the front trunion that its possible to drill it and pin it, but Im not sure, any ideas? I already returned 2 ak-74 kits a early last year because I thought it was oversized RSB's but got two back that were hand picked and are just about as loose. Thats a total of 5 that are too loose. Of course, on the hammer forged barrels, they are much tighter, but I was expecting to use the us barrels. Suggestions?

You can always knurl the barrel. If you don't have access to a lathe, center punching around the area that needs to be raised will bring it up several thousandths. I have also heard of people using a pipe cutter to knurl barrels.
I wouldn't use it for pressing a barrel into a trunnion since I've heard that it can flatten out over time, but the barrel components aren't really high pressure areas, so I wouldn't worry about those.

Your rear sight block should have a 4mm pin already. between that and how it sits between the ears of the front trunion it shouldn't move. I had one that slid on and when I put the pin in it was fine.

How undersized undersized are your barrels?

I just did my first pipe cutter ghetto knurl yesterday, and it worked like a charm. I highly recommend it.

I was able to hit it with a punch to raise it up, it went from loose to needing to be pressed on. Thanks, much easier than I would have imagined.

Loose rear sight base isn't really an issue. With the undrilled barrel that slack will be taken up when the pin gets installed.

Another method would be Red Loctite. Covers up for a lot of "sins", and when applied properly wont come off until you want it to.
