    Question: please read inside...

I don't recall ever seeing this idea discussed.... I was talking to another AK builder (out of state) and on his next build he's planning on adding the 3rd axis pin hole but welding in the axis pin in place from the inside of the receiver (without the sear obviously). He wanted to do this just to get the "look".

My question is, would this be.... legal in CA?? Or just the fact of having the 3rd hole kill the whole idea? I was thinking this would be fine because it's permanently blocked by the weld and it would be similar to the HK's having one of the take down pins, "clipped & pinned". Granted, you'll be hassled where ever you go.

So he drills the hole and then welds the pin in? As soon as the drill bit touches the receiver, it becomes illegal. Illegal in all 50 states

Hope he has the pin welded in place before he even thinks about drilling the other holes.

I think it's a bad idea. Probably not illegal in the strictest sense... But definitely not worth the risk.

If you just absolutely had to have the look, I think it would be safer to braze a axis pin head to the outside of the receiver. Lots of work for very little benefit. But, it's on par with installing a dummy selector on a M1A. It still won't have the correct "Y" dimple but whatever floats your boat!

It's the "readily made" language that'll get you tosssed in the pound pound pen. It's a pretty easy argument to show intent when you've already got the holes.
