    SoCal HK Builders?

Just doing a quick check to see if there are any builders in SoCal that have equipment and/or experience with folding/welding HK receivers? I would like to pick your brain and if you have equipment see about renting/borrowing it.

In preparing parts for a USC to UMP conversion I have HK on the brain. The HK G3 and HK33 kits are all over the place and at a somewhat reasonable price.

I will be having an H&K build party in the next 2 months. I have the bender for all size's and will have a TIG welder there as well.

Thanks for the heads up Justin. I don't currently have a kit or flats an hand but 2 months is enough time to get that resolved. I think I am going to start with an HK 33. Please keep me posted I am interested.

In talking with a number of people about HK builds I found out how difficult TIG welding is. I was considering going the complete receiver route with the rear sight already welded. I guess I have to ask the question. Will there be any experienced (read good) TIG welders at the build?

            *I'm in for this.
I hosted one, that I will admit was not entirely successful, as about only ~60% of the people ended up with a usable receiver, and only one guy got his barrel and trunnion in.

            What jig do you have?
I've got the bending jig that the guy on GB sells.
Works OK for LSC MP5 flats, not so good for the G3s.
Problem with the G3 is you need the mandrel to blow out the sides, don't have that.
We used bolt carriers with brass shims.
            Didn't work so well.

I might be interested in this. What is the easiest model to build - MP5? What's an aproximate cost to build?

Justin told me that the cost of an HK MP-5 would cost around $1500.

I started off thinking of bulding a g3 clone then mid way thru realized it was out of my skill level and time plus I ended up with enough parts to build two rifles so I ended up have one built professionally which I think was the best decision for me but I'm thinking again aince I have these left over parts a g3 pistol might be nice, good luck to those who are gonna build

Has anyone done an HK 33/53 build? Some posts say use an MP5 flat other say a G3 flat. I also have found HK 33/53 specific flats that are $300!!!!

I used to be really good about 10 years ago. I did custom turbo header fabrication and welding for a prominent VW race shop in Riverside. Since then I've only tig'd aluminum as needed.

I'll bone up and be ready for the party, or let the actual owner of the machine do the welding.

I'd LOVE for your to be there. I've had MrLoneWolf check out how the jig bent 9mm, 223 and 308 receivers at my last AK BP.

I don't expect all the work to be finished in one day. And I don't expect it to be as easy as an AK build party. But with enough guru's we should do pretty good (you'll make #3). A follow up day can be done.

The only flat jig on GB looks to be the same (or very similar) as the one I have. His pictures are different but it was covered in small arms review recently. It comes with smaller dowels to pinch the tube at the base. Not sure if we can get some rod and make some more for yours.

As for flats, this jig has bent some flats from at least three manufacturers. The more expensive "flats" bent the worst.
For any questions contact me by email.
                              Thanks,
