    trigger pull

i just got a new s&w model 442, j frame, 38p, to use as my ccw pocket carry. after qualifying with it, it became pretty obvious that i need to smooth/lighten my trigger pull. any suggestions where to start, or a recommend a gunsmith in sacramento ??

With my carry 642's I started with dryfiring. Snapcaps are not needed on these guns but I used them. 10k pulls and there was 2 differences. It was a smoother pull, and my finger was WAY more used to the action (note: pull it like you are actually shooting it). It took about 2 weeks to get it all done. I could only do 100 dry fires in one session, per hour MAX. *finger cramps!*

If you want the easy way to a better trigger pull, there are two. One is using the JB bore paste "slurry" and 100 pulls as advocated on the 642 S&W forums, or drop in trigger springs. Downside to new springs is you'll experience some random misfires. The lighter hammer spring is to blame, but a new Cylinder&Slide long firing pin fixes that issue. I bought the springs and FP, but never went this route as they are carry pieces.

I've now done the 10K pulls on (4) 642 frames. I say frames as the first two broke right at the 10K mark. Rather have it break in training than when needed for real! My FFL said try and break the second ones. Consecutive numbered guns had the same flaw. The new frames didn't flinch.

Apex Tactical Specialties just started offering their J-Frame Drop in Duty/Carry Kit and it is likely the best $25 you'll spend to make your 442 more shootable.

They also have instructional video clips one YouTube and suggestions of extra stuff you can do yourself while you have it apart

olL. Looks like they took the popular reduced power Wolff Springs and made their own FP. Compare prices on Midway, but I think ATX is slightly cheaper if you choose the spring fix route.

I didnt want to mess with the springs on my 642 carry gun, but i did have a competent S&W gunsmith smooth up all the contact surfaces inside. The pull weight is the same, but it is much smoother with no hitches. Works for me.
