BFPU Look

I have my polish tantal kit and my receiver (it's from nodak so it's finished), I wanna go for the bfpu look on this one.


Just a lot of elbow work and scotch pads? Or is there a special touch?

The "finish" on the Nodak Spud receivers is not actually a "finish" it's just coloring due to the heat treatment.

It comes off easily so don't use any abrasive that will scratch the metal or it will look funny. Any type of polishing compound will work, and give the receiver that hand held polished look.

On my Polish PMKMS I decided to leave the finish on the existing pieces in the kit. I guess you could call it a BFPU look.

I just parkerized and painted the receiver alone and reassembled the rifle. Once assembled, I used scotchbrite, some sandpaper, and wore off the finish on the high wear areas to try and mimic what I figure the receiver looked like before being cut. To add insult to injury, I occasionally rubbed the receiver down with some salt water from my quenching bucket to dull the exposed metal. Lastly, I rubbed a coat of motor oil on the rifle and used my MAPP torch to carefully heat and burn the oil a bit to give the rifle (especially the barrel components) a weathered patina. Before I did this the barrel looked almost too new. Once I toasted some oil onto it, I think the whole effect came together very nicely.

I topped it off with a set of handguards from APex that happened to come with some somewhat well preserved "Lovely Girls" stickers and a couple visible boobies.
It was too cool to pass up.


BTW, this is a single shot... so no BB.

I helped a friend of mine with a Romy M63 kit a while back.
He didn't touch any of the finish on the components but cold blued the receiver, and scotch brite/ steel wool it a bit to try and match the worn finish on the rest of the parts.
Came out pretty nice.

this has to be one of my favorite AK's of all time, the finish is simply amazing.

What kind of paint did you use on the receiver.

PS What is the little hole drilled into the side of the sight leaf?

I TOTALLY agree with 4th, that finish looks amazing. And the handguards really put that extra touch to the whole look. Nice job leland! Thanks for the "how to" as well.

This one is really my favorite too. I left the gas port undrilled to avoid soiling it with a BB. I don't mind manually racking the action on the rare occasion that I take it out to shoot. I try not to handle this one a lot to preserve the stickers.

After a lot of experimenting, I've found that this paint is a fairly close match to the original:

Matte Black duracoat is very close too.

I'll bring this one to the S. SJ BP for people to check out.


P.S. 4thSBCT: You don't miss anything! For some reason this PMKMS came with a night sight on the rear leaf. The tritium is long dead though...

.......is there anything you DIDN'T get with this kit? stickers with boobs on them, a well loved rifle finish, night sights, carved bolt carrier.......
