    Manufacturer Required Markings

    Hey all,

I'm wondering how all of you 07s mark your manufactured firearms. What machine/system do you use to engrave serial numbers, logos, etc. I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive way of meeting the ATF requirements for manufacturers marking the firearms they build.

    Thanks for the input!

BATFE requires a certain depth when engraving the serial #, place of manufacture, model etc..... Just use a CNC machine. You can get a used one for under $50k CraigsList seems to have a couple in the $40-$65k range

The few I know are using outside engravers to do this. Just make sure the minimum size and depth are met.

Yep, just stay there while the receiver are being worked on and your GTG.
Min depth is .003 with a height of 1/16" min. Name of manufacturer, city and state of manufactrer, caliber, and serial number are required.

Is the min depth of .003 measured before annodizing or after? If it's right at .003 and you go heavy with the Duracoat or some other coating are you still ok?

A cnc machine would be nice, but I don't produce enough units for a $40,000 machine to be practical. I'm looking for an engraver or some sort of system that is simple and fairly cheap to get me to that 3/16" depth and still look professional.

A panograph can be had for less than 4k (sometimes as cheap as 800 if you shop) it will be a bit more time consuming but will work

You can get away with a small hobby CNC machine for a 2-4K

I think that was a typo but just in case:

The letters have to be 1/16" (.0625") tall and 3/1000" (.003") deep, not 3/16" (.1875") deep.

I do believe you can stamp them in, just be sure not to crush the magwell or fcg pocket.

Can anyone recommend an engraver in the Inland Empire (San Bernardino, Riverside) area?
