Polish underfolder rivet problem

Before I try and reinvent the wheel, how are you guys able to buck the rear trunnion lower forward rivet?

My home made crusher is not long enough to get to it. I am a fews hours/day away from riveting, thought I would ask before I have to go into inventing crap mode.

I do it with a bucking bar and a rivet set. We tried the Toth Tool jaws on the Harbor Frieght bolt cutters and had the same problem the jaws were to short.

Worked great to. Just make sure to use something to spread the ears with a spacer to fit tight before riveting the uppers first, or it could possibly bend them and cause it to be loose.

I used a pair of bolt cutter riveters. Best idea i can think of, is to use long steel bar and your backing plate for rivet head and press. Use long stiff bar to crush rivet. Best idea i can think of. I'm sure there better ideas out there just cant think one, maybe some one else will ring in.

I will have to look again, but I don't think that rivet is going to cause me any clearance issue with the bolt. May just punch the rivet down...

Also while I have your attention...

The AK-Builder flat pistol grip reinforcement plate rivet holes are off by half the diameter, any problem with just welding it instead of welding over the holes and re-drilling? It's not like I am going to be hip-firing this thing very often.

The front hole is the only one that get's a rivet. The rear ones are for getting the pins out of the folder assembly.

The plate should be spot welded in place. Athough I guess you could drill and tig or mig some welds in place.

aha, muchas gracias, was about to make a boo boo... (well, aside from too-many-beers-stressed-from-work-2mm-off-first-bend that I already hammered out of the flat)

And the answer is: press plate with a punch as the pivot point, press the rivet flat. (see diagram)

Cool Alex, so that worked out for ya? Any problems with the press pressing against the plate at an angle?

The angle is much less steep, I just whipped that together in paint in about 1 minute. The angle shown is supposed to be 10 degrees (according to Microsoft) If that is true, the angle would be closer to about 3 degrees. I tried 2 different size punches to get a very shallow angle. I was also supporting the rivet head with a home made rivet bucking bar with a dimple cut into it.

I should note that I didn't hit upon this solution until after BIG F***ING HAMMERING one rivet to a mangled mess and removed it.

Caiman, I neglected to mention the plate I am using is just a scrap piece of 1/2" steel plate I picked up at the junk yard and cut into an oblong piece about 5" long and comes to a point one end.

The rivet does come out slightly slanted, but it is at least as flat as it needs to be. (1.5 times the thickness of the rivet body) The rivet doesn't affect any clearance that far down the receiver, so it being less than perfect shouldn't affect its performance.

If you have a drill press or are really steady with a hand drill. You could always pick up a few large set screws and drill and tap your plate to accept the set screw. That way you could make up the difference by drilling that set screw so it would be flat when pressing the rivet. Thats what I do with the AK builder stuff, I make my own buck bars rams, I just use his stuff to guide everything.
