    U.s. Barrel?

    I am just getting into shooting and have been looking at putting together an AR or AK

    Going with AK-47 due to it being cheap and easy.

    Just curious if anyone can tell me what this non-sense of having a U.S. barrel is all about and them destroying import barrels when they come in?

    Doesn't make sense.. I can understand the bullet button, and only 10 rounds... but a U.S. made barrel???

    AR is expensive but easy to put together.
    AK is cheap but harder to put together.

    AR parts are usually within a few thousandths of spec, AK is seat of the pants fitting and it still goes bang. Preferably you did the fitting well and it doesn't go BANG!

    Check the national laws on barrels. If nothing else, convince yourself the law is creating American jobs turning barrels of perceived lesser quality than the foreign ones.

      I'm thinking of just buying an already put together AK :P

      was going to go for 7.62x39 just for cheap ammo...

      and I know that would not be a good idea in an AR

      I just don't get the logic behind not allowing foreign barrels... makes no sense..

        federal law no longer allows the importation firearms, and barrels there of unless they are generally recognized to be "particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes" and guess who gets to decide what is and is not "readily adaptable to sporting purposes". Thats right the BATFe!*dingdingding*...bunch of f**kin' r-tards!

        You understand the BB and 10 rounds? how? it's just as idiotic.

          Yes it is idiotic... I just mean a gun will obviously be less usable / lethal with a bullet button and 10 round mag limit....

          with a U.s barrel?? makes no sense...

          and it's looking like the ak build requires lots of tools that are expensive and i do not know how to use, and would be cheaper to just buy one already made...

            Not true if you go to a build party al you do is pay the fee and all the tools are their for you and plenty on knowlegable people to help you during your build, trust me its alot more satisfying to build your own, where are u located?

              The idea was that we couldn't build them if we didn't have barrels....because apparently they thought nobody in the US knew how to make a rifle barrel

              like straykiller said. You don't need to purchase tons of tools to build your own AK. Just look for a build party in your general vicinity sign up.

                I'm in nor-cal close enough to Sacramento, or Santa Rosa.. San-Francisco is a bit far.

                Cheapest kit I've been able to find is $279 with no barrel or receiver.

                Could anyone recommend something better?

                  If you get a Green Mountain make sure it is the newest ones. Their newest ones are as good as the Russians. It is shame we have to have these. Damn import ban.

                    At the so-cal parties we have taught IT techs, lab geeks, musicians, artists, women, and children to build ak's. Many of them with zero experience. Hell, we could teach your grandmother to build AK's. I'm sure the boys(and girls?) throwing the sac build party's can help you get built.

                    Dear god! where did you see a barrelless kit for $279? that's either a rare kit or highway robbery.

                    ak-builder has kits with barrels.

                    There's also some on gunbroker, and floating around akfiles or theakforum. Or if you buy a barrelless kit you can purchase a us barrell from one the various suppliers and send it out to be populated and headspaced by a pro for about $100.

                      Ak-builder.com has romanian kits with headspaced US barrels for $279. Also check apexgunparts.com and whatacountry.com.

                      You don't actually need a US made barrel, they just can't import the originals with the kits anymore. From what I understand Apex will be getting more virgin romanian barrels in a few weeks.

                      Remember if you build an ak you will need not only the parts kit, barrel and receiver, you will still need a trigger group, magazine, misc us parts, rivets, ect.

                        So they don't sell "complete" kits?

                        and where could I get a receiver... trigger group... and all that other stuff

                        I figured I could find a receiver online and do the whole shipping to an FFL thing.

                          Well, that's the thing. There isn't any national laws on barrels. The current situation is that the ATF has made thier own determination that they won't allow barrels to be imported anymore.
