    AK-47 MILLED RECEIVER

I am new to this so be patient if I keep asking for advice because am

From all the different reviews and feedbacks, I am going for the milled receiver. Where can I buy one (MLS99) in the Bay Area? I know where to go for the Rommy G kit but where can you get an all American parts kit w/chrome lined barrel? Or piece it together one by one? I don't mind spending a little money if it is worth it.

I have gone through different "AK" threads on on this forum and another forum but have gotten very info on assembling the rifle using a milled receiver. There was one with pics but there are section that left me with questions. Please lend me your KNOWLEDGE.

You need to buy a parts kit made for a milled receiver. The Romy G kits are made for stamped receivers only I think.

Milled receiver just needs to have the barrel pressed in and that's basicly it.

Although...I guess you could technically buy a kit for a stamped receiver and just take the barrel out and press it into the milled receiver. I think the stock mounting is different between milled and stamped though...

There was a thread about this this morning. I just can't find it but here is :

This wasn't the OP's question though. He's looking for an all american milled AK which AFAIK is the Century Centurion.

Parts kits originate from mainly East European countries which have now surplussed their AK-47 and 74 pattern rifles (mainly due to joining NATO, and having to meet STANAG compliance). As AK pattern rifles have select fire, they cannot be legally imported into the US, so the receivers are torched and the rest of the parts (and since 2005, minus the barrels) are shoved into a poly bag and shipped here as parts kits.

            Bigthaiboy is correct.
Doubt you'll find an american made milled receiver AK kit.
There are still some Yugoslavian milled kits floating around that can be re-welded into some fine rifles.
Search the AK specific forums, and gunbroker for them.
Look for numbers matching original barreled kits (with a good bullet test) then get yourself some repair plates from Turbothis, and a welder, and weld away.
FYI the Yugos didn't have chrome lined bores but Green Mountain is making US made made replacement barrels for them that are IMHO top notch.
Check some of the threads I have started on 'how to' re-weld these kits.
I have done 5 of them for myself, and have tutored more than 10 others on how to make it happen.

That is correct. I understand where parts kit come from and why they come like that. However since he mentioned searching for an all American parts kit i just brought it to his attention that they do make a complete rifle out of American parts. Why go through the trouble building a milled UNICORN when he can just buy one.

I haven't built an AK yet but I try to read all the threads by Mach, Nico, just to mention a few about builds every chance I get and hopefully I can go to a BP as a guest before I attempt to even build one from a flat.

OBTW I love your post in the Pic.thread the one in front of your garage.

I'm guessing if you really wanted the challenge of of building an all-American milled AK, you could possibly could source about 70% of the parts from various online sources, but by the time you've finished, it would be an expensive AK.

Thank you. I've added a couple more since then, too.

I have put together four OLLs picking and chosing some really quality parts. So far they all have shot flawlessly so I think this AK build will be the same. I am wrong in my thinking? With this build build, I can slowly put it together with money permitting. I take pride in my builds and if it shoots accurately, I could not ask for more.

Today, I spent three hours looking up info for thi AK build. It appears that I will have to piece a parts kit from several sources and then some to complete the this AK.

Keep the advice and info comming. Thanks in advance.

I think the question is what type of OLL rifles were those that you built? Assembling an AR and welding up an AK kit have nothing in common. When you start piecing together stuff you could be in for a real rough time unless you have some mechanical capabilities and equipment. Good luck!

The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

                          AR != AK

AR building is assembling. AK building is welding/machining. They are essentially totally different, unless you buy a 100% milled receiver. And even in that, you will need to headspace, which is not the same as AR. Do some searching for "populating a barrel" and "ak headspacing" to see what you will have to do in order to piece together an AK. Both of these processes are eliminated when you purchase an original, numbers-matching, with-barrel kit. This is your greatest chance at success unless you have someone experienced assisting you.

I have to Agree with SJGG on this.
The AR, and AK platforms are completely different animals.
ARs are legos. If you can put a pin in hole you can build assemble one.
                            AKs are 'fit together'.
In other words pieces are file/ dremel/ pressed to work with all the other pieces during a build.
I have done a build from random parts I had before but I would not suggest it for a first time builder.
A numbers matching kit with original barrel is a good place to start with AKs.
That way you know all the pieces originally came from the same rifle that was assembled at the factory before it was demilled.
This will probably still require some fitting to your new receiver but far less than a random bunch of parts from different guns/ countries of origin.
After a build or two under your belt you'll have a good understanding of how they work. Then tackle something more challenging.

no, AR building is machining, AR assembling is assembling.
SJGG, yours, and nicoroshi's points about the differences between the way AR & AK parts fit together are all valid, and it's true that with an AK one typically has to do some de-mil-ing that isn't necessary on an AR build.
but as someone who builds both ARs (from 0% & 80% lowers) as well as AKs (from flats & parts kits), i take exception with the use of the word "build" to mean "assemble" for ARs, but really mean "build" for AKs.
folks who buy all brand new AR parts and fit them together like legos are not building ARs, they are assembling them.
                              sorry, pet peeve.
