Could be your WASR is over gassing. If it is pushing the bolt flying back with too much force, it can pop your receiver cover off. It's happened to me before when I installed a fake can. Check the rear of your bolt carrier and rear trunnion for any signs of contact. Easy fix would be to increase to a stronger recoil spring.

a stronger spring would seem to be a good fix, since when i was inspecting it with someone else today it just looked that the spring wasnt pushing it forward enough. thanks for the advice, I think ill try that first before doing any modifications. now to track one down.

Sounds like it could be a couple of things. Change the recoil spring first. Also put some tape on the rear trunnion and shoot a few rounded. The trunnion could have been set back a little farther then it should be which could make your receiver cover fly off under recoil. Quick fix is to bend the back end of the cover out a little to increase it's length. Proper did is to remove the trunnion, weld the holes and reinstall the trunnion with proper top cover fit up.

Thanks for the responses and help guys, ordered the spring and will try that first. I probably put around 50 rounds through it (first time taking it shooting) before it happened.

I would get that gun to somebody who knows AK's. Something could be wrong with the rivets if this started after 50 rounds. A weak recoil spring would show up within the first few rounds. Did you buy the gun new or used? Are you 100% sure it's not a kit build? Sounds to me like there could be a rivet issue, that's an easy fix if caught soon enough. If not it could require a demill and rebuild.

Had the same problem. It was fixed by bending the rear flange to lengthen the dust cover a mite. No problems since.
