    Homebrew M76 from AK-Builder M70 flat

I'm stuck on my two M70 builds for the moment and only able to proceed with the M72 RPK until I work out my issue with the Green Mountain barrel's gas port angle. For everyone edification, I was unable to find wood stocks that suited my needs, so I headed to Solar Tactical and bought several grip straps and ended up with the parts to do the very config I originally was attempting to avoid. Go figure.

Has anyone attempted to build a Yugo M76 from a stamped receiver flat? As far as I can tell, they were all milled, so the front trunnion will probably need some grinding or shimming to fit the 1.5 mm receiver. I'm looking at some 10 round mags and parts kits on Gunbroker and GunsAmerica that come up every now and again that might help setting up the receiver for the comparatively long 7.92x57mm round and differing bolt and bolt carrier. There is going to be some cutting involved, no doubt.

The other option would be the M77/M80, of which at least some amount of production units were stamped receivers and chambered in 7.62x51mm. Sure, I could buy a Saiga .308 and convert it, but the same could be said about a carbine or rifle in 7.62x39 mm as well.

Essentially I want the big brother to the M70, which I'm sure I'll work out in another week. In the meantime, I'd like to plan out a bit further for the full power Yugo DMR/Druganov class rifles I would like to build next. It's more of an "advanced" level build and I'm going to need some help from the usual suspects.

    Thanks fellas,

I have a stamped m72 ,I would reweld it if it was milled

grinding down stubs to make it work out in a stamped receiver is ghetto

      Shady,

If I can find a stamped parts kit, then no grinding will be necessary to the front trunnion (I'm not using the rear anyway, ACE or Tromix stock planned). Do you recall where you found your stamped M76 and was it as a parts kit, or a fully assembled weapon?

What front trunnion were you planning on using? Yugo RPK? Another thing to consider is the extended length of the action. You'll need to elongate the receiver considerably. A PSL receiver would probably be less headaches.

I actually just picked up my m76 receiver today. Let me know if you need any references.

                Tujungatoes,

I'm hoping to score a front trunnion for an M76 since I understand the dimensions (wider barrel, bigger hole in the trunnion) to differ from those of the M72/M70 barrel shank diameter.

I too was unaware of a stamped M76, though I had heard about stamped M77 and M80 rifles in 7.62x51 NATO. This is my fall back position if I can't work out the parts list for M76 build.

I'd like to see some images of the M76 in question too, if possible.

                  Tujungatoes,

I would like to get some dimensions on your M76 receiver to find out whether an M72 receiver is long enough for a starting point, or if I need to give up now. I might give Curtis a call at AK-Builder for a run of a dozen or so for the adventurous types. Does anyone know what his manufacturing minimum is for a batch of one-offs?

The next challenge will be front trunnions and anything else that may differ from the Yugo M70/M72 if source parts kits are as problematic as searches for M76, M77 and M80 would suggest.

Does anyone know the guy at CNC-Warrior.com? I tried to find out if he could custom make front trunnions but I haven't received a response.

I'm not interested in a strictly model correct build, since I'm not going to use the standard furniture anyway. I'm also not planning to embark on something this challenging yet since I have yet to successfully build a more common model. This is just planning for the the next few months after I have some half dozen builds under my belt. Whatever I learn along the way will be updated in this thread.

Shady made a type-o earlier. He was referring to an m72.

I don't think you'll be finding any trunnions as they're milled receiver rifles. I'm not aware of any stamped M76's(although I've been wrong before...alot). A bulged trunnion from an M70/72 would probably be a good donor. You're not going to find a flat thats going to work without considerable modifications either, and the cost of a custom flat from curtis would probably be several times what a built rifle would cost. That's the advantage of the PSL receivers. Especially the NodakSpud ones, as they're the right length and accept standard stamped ak stocks.

As far as barrels green mountain is the only company making them. They spec their barrel shank diameter at. 907". Might be a touch small for the average front trunnion, but if necessary it could be knurled.

...the list goes on really. I'm not trying to discourage you. I'd really like to see you do this, but know going into it that there's gonna be a significant amount of custom fab involved.

I'm game if I can convince Roccobro to do the custom fabricated parts of my build.

Sounds like you should get in touch with TurboThis, he might be game to work out a trunnion for you. Hell he could have a program for something that might work. If you want a flat build, pm me and I'll see it I can work something up. I'm experimenting with making my own flat for a project. (or trying to if I ever get some time to sit down and draw it out.)
