Try removing the magazine.

So each time you pull the slide back the slide lock engages? Do you have an empty magazine in the gun?

Yes it engages each time as it should. But it seems like there is twice the spring pressure as it should be. When locked open I can't push the slide release with one thumb, it is too hard but if I push the slide back a little to take pressure off the slide release it works ok. It also slams closed extremely hard. It is like my spring is too powerful. It worked perfect until i disassembled and reassembled it. I must have something in wrong. ThanksComment

There are only two ways that I know of to engage the slide stop:
1. Using your thumb to manually to engage the slide stop.
2. An empty magazine in the gun, the follower in the magazine will push the slide stop up into the locking position.

Have you fired the gun? If not try putting some rounds through it to break it in. As another has said are you trying to push the slide release with an empty magazine in? If so remove the magazine and try the slide stop with no pressure on it. Also 1911's do not like it when you slam them closed on an empty chamber so try not to do this much. Last if all the above fail to correct the problem your slide stop may be out of spec and might need some metal removed or to be replaced. Do not do this if you do not know what you are doing.Comment

It was brand new. shot 200 factory (Winchester) rounds and it worked perfect! took home, disassembled the slide, spring, barrel etc... didn't touch the trigger, hammer etc.. Put it back together and now it feels like there is too much spring pressure. it is very difficult to press the front spring into the gun and rotate the bushing to hold into place. Maybe I should take it to a gunsmith.Comment

reassembly of 45
What area do you live in? Did you buy it from a store that has a gunsmith in the building? If it's that hard to work the slide release, DON"T try to shoot it before you have a professional look it over.Comment

slide release
You should not release the slide using the slide release on an empty magazine.
If releasing the slide without a magazine inserted or on an empty magazine, grasp the slide with your hand and ease it forward, it will function normally and easily with a loaded magazine.Comment
