    Featureless grip parameters?

Alright guys, I have a couple of questions regarding featureless style grips. I know that it is defined as:

"pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon" means a grip that allows for a pistol style grasp in which the web of the trigger hand (between the thumb and index finger) can be placed below the top exposed portion of the trigger while firing.

I see many of the DIY grips being epoxied or riveted on. I've seen some where there is still a large gap above the fin but below the buffer tube. I also see that most of fins extend all the way to the bottom of the grip but not entirely. I made rev A for myself today and want to make sure everything is legit (that is a 10 round mag and the BB is still functional). I plan on making revB so that it fits a tighter to the stock and so that it extends all the way to the bottom of the grip. For those who are curious it is made out of polycarb and was cut with a band saw.

    Questions:
    1. Should the fin be permanently attached (epoxy or rivets) or can they be bolted on?

    2. Does the fin need to go all the way to the bottom of the grip?

    1. As long as the fin can't be removed without the use of a tool, it should be permanent enough for the purpose. As an example, Solar Tactical grip wraps are secured with a trio of screws.

    2. The critical issue IMO (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) is not allowing the thumb to cross the grip in such a manner that the web of the hand is at or below the level of the top of the trigger. If one could not wrap a hand around the grip below your fin and reach the trigger it should be fine. If one cannot get a thumb between the fin you show and the stock and/or lower, it should be fine but I'd want it to fit a little tighter so that there is no question.

I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

There is definitely no way to get your thumb through the gap at the top but you can almost hold one at the bottom. I'm going to make another on and tighten up both spots.

precisely and well stated. I would probably try to make your fin go a little lower on the grip. Just because you can't doesn't mean that someone else with larger hands wouldn't be able to wrap their thumb around the bottom and still be able to pull the trigger.

That's what I was thinking after I assembled it; I'm going to make another today and will post pics for verification/consensus later.

          cheers

Also, make sure it's strong enough that it can't easily (reasonably easy) be broken or bent to allow a pistol style grasp.

Well it's 1/4" poly carb so it should be pretty damn strong.

And still reach the trigger? I think any more cleaning up would make it better, but if it can't be removed without the use of a tool, you're fine.

                    Nice

how is the fin fixed to the grip? is there anything other than epoxy and pressure holding it in?

                    - edit just saw the questions under your picture - I would suggest as much permanence to ensure it needs a tool to be removed.
