was wondering if it would be possible to build a bolt gun chambered for this round. i think it would make a relatively good varmint gun over my .22 bolt action i have now and still be on the quiet side. if anyones seen one before let me know ive been searching and haven't found a thing. thanks

Beat me to it... Savage 5.7 Bolt andAlso, just FYI Excel 5.7sModel 25 Walking Varminter: Savage expands its popular line of Model 25 lightweight varmint guns with the Synthetic-stocked Walking Varminter, which weighs in at less than 7 lbs. Like other models in the Model 25 lineup, it features a trimmed-down reduced-diameter action made specifically for the smaller calibers that are so popular to varmint shooters. It also has a medium-contour barrel, AccuTrigger and a detachable box magazine. The Walking Varminter also brings several new calibers to the Model 25 lineup. Calibers include the traditional 223 Rem. And 204 Ruger. New calibers are 22 Hornet, 222 Rem., and 5.7 x 28. Suggested Retail $551.

The .17 bee always intrigued me, does the 5.7 have more reloading options than the .17?
The .17 bee is based on necked down .30 carbineLast edited by jtv3062; 03-14-2011, 12:54 PM.Do not fear the enemy, for your enemy can only take your life. It is far better that you fear the media, for they will steal your Honour

so, i gotta ask... why 5.7x28? why not .223 or one of the zillions of other existing varmint cartridges?
5.7 is more expensive, available in fewer loads, and weaker. i'm not a fan of the "like a .223, but..." rounds - i'm not even a fan of .223 - so i don't see any use of 5.7 outside of being small enough to fit in a Five-Seven or P90. heck, i think it's hilarious that someone even makes a bolt-action 5.7.
the only think i can think of is if you want something weaker than a .223 for recoil or preserving pelts. but in that case, a .22 Win Mag would have just a bit less power and range for a lot less money and a lot more bullet selection.

If you ever tried the hornet- or even the K hornet- You'll wonder why you put up with the noise and medium powder charge... the hornet make over 3000 fps with 9-12 gr of powder adn ou dnon;t need earplugs. The 5.7 is the same way, but with better and cheaper factory ammo options than the hornet.Comment

i mainly want a 5.7x28 because it wouldn't be much louder than the .22 i use for squirrel shooting right now. where i shoot it needs to be quiet, a .223 would be to loud for multiple shots and from what i hear is the 5.7 round has great ballistics and flys pretty flat. i just think it would be a good upgrade for my dedicated squirrel gun. correct me if im wrong i dont have any experience with the round personally, but i just want something that shoots farther faster and straighter than a .22 that isnt a whole lot louder. .17 hornet is out of the question because of how much it is affected by the wind so the 5.7x28 just seems like a good fitLast edited by straykiller; 03-16-2011, 11:56 AM.
