Is this normal for an AK?

My friend has a WASR. Every so often when he shoots it, maybe 5 in 100 rounds, he has a puff of smoke come out the rear of the rifle through the dust cover and opening in the where the selector sets the AK on safe.

What would be causing this? Is this normal? Is it safe? (He has shot 400+ rounds without the rifle going kaboom)

i would check headspace, do you know what the brass and primers are coming out looking like?

The brass and primers seemed normal when I looked at them while he was shooting. I have told him that I will check his headspace with my no-go gauge when he is free.

Sloppy chamber with steel case ammo can cause poor sealing at firing. Head space would be indicative by a stretched case body. See how far a spent casing form his WASR goes into a 'good working' AK's chamber. If it won't let the bolt rotate AT ALL, the chamber is DEFINITELY overly long and will cause issues eventually..
