    1911 sight question

    hey everyone,

i have a springfield 1911 milspec that i want to swap sights on,
i know how to swap the rear sight but the front sight is a post styl sight.

The front sight is staked. That means the metal under the tab (the tenon) that fits in the slot of the gun was split, flattened, and ground smooth.

The easiest way to get a staked sight off is to break the sight itself off and push the tenon through from the top of the slide to the inside.

To replace a staked sight, you will need a sight staking tool and a something to use to smooth the metal underneath. A better idea would be to give it to a gunsmith and ask him to cut a standard Novak front sight dovetail into the gun. That will give you far more flexibility in replacement sights.

You can send the slide to several places and they will do the work with about a two week turn around. I would suggest Novak's or Heine's.
