    Need help de-populating a barrel

So my K Var barrel assy seems to be permanently bonded together. My little 12 ton press couldnt break her free. I will note I didnt try heat. Gonna get some better penetrating oil and let it sit for a while. Im in Burbank If anyone would like to help me set her free from the RSB and FSB

Hmm...it really shouldn't take that much force. What are you using for support?

Stupid question but, did you press the barrel pin out first? Other than that, I'd guess that it's a new US made barrel and was slightly oversized for the trunion but, KVAR took the easy route and pressed it in anyway. Try freezing and heating.

Some bar stock from work. I went as far as I dared seemed like it should have pleanty of weight on it to break it free. Even gave it a few love taps with no luck. Maybe Im just a wuss and need to crank it down.

The barrel isnt in the trunnion. K Var's barrel assy had the RSB and FSB already pressed on the barrel. The pin holes for them havent even been drill all the way through yet.

So freeze the assy and heat right before pressing out.

I tried the cuss and ***** method but it didnt work.

Are these the AK104 or 105 barrels? I have done both and they were difficult to push off. I have a 20 ton press which probably enabled me to get them to go. They did make a "bang" when the parts first moved though.

Why don't you srill the pin holes with the front and rear SBs in place? That's the way I've done it. If it's a 47, you might have to drill the gasport hole too. You do that with the gas block in place!

Make sure everything is stable, then load up the press and hit the base of the bottle jack with a 2lb single jack. It'll give you an impact wrench effect.
I've done that with some Yugo kits to keep from galling up the barrels when pressing off the trunnions.

I would love to do this but for one the barrel is crooked in relation to the RSB and FSB and 2 I need to turn the barrel down to fit my trunnion.

How is it crooked? I use the notch for the lower handgaurd retainer to put a long steel rod on in order to eyeball alignments. If I understand you right, you might just want to R&R the FSB to make it lign up right. Also, Datdarkness needed to take a few thousandths off his barrel in order for it to fit his trunion. I gave him a sanding sponge block and it took him about 15-20 minutes to take care of the problem. You might be able to get away with doing the same thing.

The "feed ramp notch thing" on the barrel doest line up vertically with the RSB so if I were to install the barrel straight up the RSB would be canted slightly to one side.

My trunnion ID measures .868 (was a 22mm but I tried to hone it to work) and my barrel is about .905 (23mm). I think is too much to remove without using a lathe.

Bad picture but I think it shows the issue.

STOP! That's the way the ejection port is supposed to be! It is not supposed to be vertical.

As far as the barrel fit, you could always open up the trunion to .902 with a boring bar instead of tearing your barrel down.

Not sure what ejection port you are referring too unless its also the extractor relief. I understand the relief cuts for the extractor are suppose to be there. I was referring to the little ramp that feeds the rounds into the chamber. Its not verticel with the RSB.

I would prefer to mod the trunnion instead. My work isnt set up for a boring bar (dont have the tools).

See circled area. Am I missing something?????

Yea, I ment to say extractor cut not ejection port. Anyway, I wouldn't try to change the cant of the feed ramp. I bet it won't be an issue at all.

I can understand that. My priority is getting the gas port oriented properly (straight up). If the feed ramp is off after that Ill have to live with it. It just looks as if it was populated a little off.

Is it a 74 barrel with a predrilled gas port or a 47 barrel that needs/needed the gas port drilled? Then again, as long as the gas port is venting within the gas block, does it really make a difference whether it is perfectly verticle or not?
