i am looking for info regarding the steps of machining a upper raw forging. setups, order, etc. im sure i can figure it out, since i dont have a stripped upper to compare with im hoping someone here could give some tips and or things to avoid. has anyone actually done one? google searching is an endless list of lower info but no upper.

I would join the HomeGunsmith.com forum and ask if anyone has it documented. I haven't been able to renew my membership yet, but they might have what your looking for. Good luck.

If you do this successfully, I would love to see pics and a write-up.

Doing an upper doesn't appeal to me as much as a lower because you can buy them without the DROS hassle. I suspect, but don't know, that the tolerances are much tighter and the operations significantly harder.

Where did you find raw forgings?

DSA has them. $25 for uppers $25 for lowers. for me its just another challenge kinda like a first build. if i do get it going ill do a write up for everyone. i expect to screw a few up so it may take me awhile. anyway any info/tips would be great!
