lookin' good! did you heat them up beforehand? and, yeah, some cold blues will actually continue to rust and darken for a bit longer - i dunno about with oil on 'em, tho.

if you really want to get a durable finish on there, do several rounds of heavy rubbing with oil (dark stuff should come off on the cloth), degreasing (wipe with rubbing alcohol or carb cleaner), heating (just warm to the touch), and cold blue. what that does is remove any excess rusty cruft and reveal more surface for the blue to treat. cold blue is hardly a durable finish, but repeated applications will make the finish deeper and darker.

I also rub it on with steel wool and it seems to even out and give it more of a dull patina over an actual "blue" hue. This method really matches the Yugo AK finish pretty well.

Thanks I'll look at their website right now, planning to do this on my ak build. Hope it comes out like the one you did.

Have you tried DICROPAN? It seems to be even darker than Oxpho Blue, but I hear it may not be as durable.

I love the Oxpho liquid. It makes small part and touch ups a snap. In less than a minute parts are black.

Caution- when your done bluing, be sure to neutralize the solution. Directions say to run under water then oil. I've skipped the water step and went to oil. Found RUST the next day despite the oil.

                            looking great!

hmm, i just had an idea for these cold blue treatments. they're so much cheaper and more convenient than a true rust bluing, but they're generally considered not as durable. i wonder if you could make up the difference (without needing more equipment) by applying some kind of clear coat, like DuraCoat clear.
