    CHambering a .308

OK I rebarreled a rem 700 a few years back. I've noticed that the fireformed brass wont fit a standard rem chamber. I did the work with a somewhat primitive reamer pusher. I've since made a floating reamer that I think can do a better job. I started to set the barrel back and recut the chamber but after pondering the problem for a few hours I'm not sure the problem is that bad.
I'm thinking I should take chamber casts to see if I can measure a difference that way. Anyone have any advice?
    thanks Mike

What was the headspace of your chamber vs the Rem chamber you tested with?

If the reamer is "primitive" then the dimensions might not be to SAAMI specs in all dimensions. The web of the case expands when fired and with chambers of different dimensions this portion of the case may not fit. The length of the barrel shanks may be different allowing a different amount of unsupported case. The recoil lug will also vary the shank lengths. Length of chamber will create different sizes of fired case because of cartridge taper.

It is common for brass from one chamber not to fit another chamber.

Yeah I think you're right. The rem chamber looks a bit shorter .002 or .003. but thats not installed with the bolt. I had some doubts about this chamber but I think I was just looking for something to worry about.Full length resized brass fits fine. Probably the fire formed brass just really likes one chamber. Think I'll just put it back together.

PS the reamer was Clymer match but the pusher I made wasn't hardened. I've since made on that has a ball bearing in a floating holder that worked well when I used it. I was probably just looking for something to use it on.
