    bluing?

so i got a old Smith and Wesson model 10 that the barrel got 3 bullets stuck in it and bulged like a snake that just ate 3 fat rets (yeah yeah i know that is no good trust me my grandfather all ready lectured me when i told him the story) now i figure i cant really sell the gun without a barrel so i have decided to keep it and fix it up and just have a nice old smith model 10 and a fun project i bought a new barrel for it and i was thinking about re-bluing it my question is
is this something i can do on my own?
    how hard is it?
and is this something you do with the barrel on or off the gun?
That punk pulled a Glock 7 on me. You know what that is? It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. Dosen't show up on your airport X-ray machines, here, and it cost more than you make in a month.

It depends on what kind of bluing you are trying to do? cold or hot blue

Cold blue, the stuff you can buy at walmart is very easy to use. Brownells sells cold blue solutions also. however, cold blue is not wear or corrosion resistant. I feel that its best for touching up small scratches but not for large surface areas.

Hot bluing and rust bluing gives you the deep blue black finish that you are looking for. rust bluing takes a long time but heard that it gives great results.

Hot bluing, which I ended up doing myself was much more difficult but gave me the finish that I wanted in a short period of time. I researched a lot and worked on the process to perfect it. I have a thread that shows what was done. the hardest part was getting the chemicals. But I think Brownells sells it... not sure

You won't get that nice smith bluie purplie color they have when they're new. Cold bluing will only get you black, mostly, not an actual blue. You COULD strip the whole gun and cold blue it, but I've not had much luck with Smiths. The steel is HARD and the blue doesn't really soak in like it does on other guns. I've tried cold blu, several brands, on a pre-model 14 and had mixed results.

I'll give you a hunert bucks for it with the bad barrel, and you can return the new one, IF you make it to the 90631 area. you can even practice your bluing on it before I buy it!!

glad to hear you survived the bbl. incident. that could have been REAL ugly. looks like the rest could use refinish too. will need a LOT of buffing to look nice with all those pits. park might be your best route.

probably your easiest route. doesn't matter how deep, you have to buff out or they'll show bad with any kind of reblue. park it and add a lanyard swivel to the butt for a real military look.
