Finished my first AR build on an 80% Tactical Machining receiver. It was $200 for a jig and 1 receiver, and $499 for an AK/AR Parts kit, 16" M4 contour barrel, Chrome lined. Not counting the price of end mills, it was $699, I still have the jig, and another receiver($80). A guy I work with bought almost the same kit, has a horrendous trigger pull, and mags won't stay in. Mine functions well, but I haven't fired it yet.

As far as your friends build goes... If it chambers correctly, He should file the mag catch until it locks properly. If not, Sounds like a bad mil. and he should deepen the magwell until the maglock engages. He should probably have a good gunsmith mic. it for him explaining it was an 80% build.
The trigger is another story. Depends which LPK he purchased. An aftermarket trigger such as Timney, Jard, or a trigger job by a qualified gunsmith would help. I put a Jard, fully adjustable, 1.5 lb trigger on mine. Wouldn't trade it for any other. But don't breathe on it with the safety off! This trigger could be very dangerous without proper ediquite. Safety on until ready to fire rather than simply finger off the trigger. A 3 lb. pull is light. 1.5 in practally non existant. If you drop or bump the rifle with the safety either off or out of adjustment, No telling where the bullet will go. I would go with a 3-4 lb pull min. for your first build as 6 lbs. is pretty much standard for most LPK's. Even my Kimber 1911 has a 6 lb. pull. And that feels very light and crisp.
Don't try a trigger job unless you know what you are doing or you may end up either ruining your FCG or with a FA weapon (felony).Last edited by diginit; 01-09-2011, 10:18 PM. -
Tried the rifle out today, got off a few rds. Seems the bolt does not retract all the way back into the carrier, therefore not stripping off the next round. My mag also will come unseated, and I had to bring the rifle home after it jammed on an unfired round. When I brought it home, I was able to separate the upper and lower, and pry back the bolt with a screwdriver through the magwell. Repeated dry testing at home duplicates the problems.
