    Scratch-built bolt action receiver

Anyone here have any experience doing this? I presume that getting the dimensions to the receiver of a 722 or 700 is not that hard, and replicating it can't be something so difficult as to prohibit a home-crafted unit.

Been wanting to do it for a while, figured someone here might have some experience.

are you going to have the ability to correctly heat treat the reciever? this is where most will be like ahhshiz. I can get access to a machine shop to build the reciever itself. but I would have no way to do the heat treating for it, and definately noway other than swaging it to judge the heat treatment I did do on it.

Very good question - I suppose I should determine exactly what is considered "acceptable" regarding heat treating.

Plenty of places in US that will heat treat it for you.

For a Remington style receiver it's pretty straight forward. Your biggest challenge will be the lug raceways.

Pacific Metallurgical in Washington (pacmet.com) treats quite a few rifle actions for gunsmiths, they know their stuff and do a good job.

Lots of info on building actions at Benchrest Central. Search in Gunsmith's Corner and you will find lots of builds documented with pictures, material descriptions, and processes. It might help you avoid some pitfalls.

The broaches for the raceways are pretty impressive. Hard to duplicate in the home shop.

A machine tool called a Shaper can easily cut lug raceways. It cuts in a to and fro motion. Many machining hobbiests have them in their garages as they sell for cheap scrap prices nowadays, they are considered obsolete machines but jobs such as raceways in a tube cannot be done with a Bridgeport mill but is easy with a shaper. No need for expensive broaches.
