    RIA feed fix?

My five inch tactical only eats round nose ammo, what do I need to do so that it'll eat hollow points?

I've heard I have to smooth out the feed ramp with a dremel and notch the hood with a needle file. I've already switched to kimber mags with shorter mag lips that has rid of most of the other feeding issues.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Pics also a plus.

    Thanks guys

I would check the extractor tension before I started playing with the Dremel. If the new mag helped, probably all you have to do is check your breech face for high spots and the extractor to make sure the slide picks up the rounds out of the magazine and holds them in place to feed properly.

If you do decide to use a Dremel on the feedramp, all you want to do is use the cloth polishing wheel with polishing compound. Shine it up.

I've never heard of putting a notch in the hood to improve feeding hollowpoints. What does that do? Does it have to do with 3-point jams?

I would NOT use a Dremel on the ramp! Use a finger and Crocus cloth to polish the ramp.

Read through this thread. If you are using a dremel, just POLISH the ramp, don't remove any metal or change the angle.

I bought my first 1911 a couple weeks ago, a RIA 1911 tactical in the satin nickel finish. I took the thing all apart, cleaned all the packing oils off of it, lubed it all up and put it back together. Really nice feeling/looking gun I've got to say. A couple days later I bought a box of...

RIAs have a good warranty, but if you remove metal from the feedramp you can void it.

Every time a gun owner buys a Dremel, a gunsmith's kid goes to college.

            Seriously.

The RIA is a cheap gun so it's not bad to learn on, but understand that you are learning and there is a fine line between an ineffective mod, successful mod, and scrapped part.

Personally, my RIA Tactical feeds JHP with no problems.
How new is it (round count)?
What brand ammo? I'm using Speer 200gr Gold Dot JHP+P
Stock magazines? I'm using Wilson Combat. Every now and then I'll get a fail to feed with the stock magazine, but the Wilsons run great.

thanks for the comments guys. The stock mag is almost worthless in my gun. The wilsons I have cut the jamming down a bit, but not enough. The kimber mags have yet to jam with round ammo. All mags jam with hollows. Round count is 400. Mods include wilson combat magwell, shock buff kit, mag release, hogue grips, and painted sights. Putting her back to stock didn't change anything. But I did find that the stock spring on the WC guide rod help considerably. The spring that came with the kit was very tight(might work well with a compsenater if I decide to go the ninja route).

So what should I look for with the extractor?

                Thanks again for the help!

Keep shooting it til it breaks in and they will feed fine. You have to understand those pistols were designed to shoot ball ammo, and though there are ways to modify to help feed HPs leave it be til you have more rounds through it. The ramp will ultimately wear enough to do so on its own. My buddy's GI has about 1000 through it and he now finally can feed them, but prior to that round count, he couldn't (reliably and consistently).
