Rem 870 problem has me baffled

    Hello Calgunners!

So hoping someone can help me out. I went over to my buddies house yesterday because he needed help cleaning his friends Rem 870(he knows that I own one). The first issue with the gun was that the action was sticking, but the gun hadnt been properly stored and the gun both outside, and inside the reciever had rust on it. I took the whole thing apart, worked on getting the rust off and gave it a good cleaning. When I reassembled the action it then "racked" just fine, I figured that the rust had been causing the "sticking." But then when I put the barrel back on, the action got worse then it did in the first place As I manipulated the action back (too expose the chamber) the action would really stick, almost to the point of being completely stuck; and to close the bolt I would have to lift hard and slam it forward. I take the barrel off, action would be fine again. Ive never had a problem like this with my 870, and I did the same thing to this gun, as I do mine in terms of stripping and cleaning. I probably took it apart 5 times again, and found no reason for this. Anyone got a clue?

First thing I look at on racking issues if the fore end.

Remove the fore end (by pushing down the ears inside the receiver), make sure the action bars are straight and square.
    Looking for a 3" Magnum 870 $200-$250ish

I thought the same thing, and the bars on inspection seemed to be fine. Hmm..maybe ill take another look at though just in case.

Did you pull the trigger assembly out?

I pulled it out just too look if any rust had gotten to it, put it back just fine. Do you think that a problem with the trigger assembly could cause that kind of sticking?

Action bar lock out of place.

Feed latches broken or on wrong side of action bar.

            Bent action bar/s.

As far as the gun goes is there any aftermarket stuff, maybe a foreend? I don't see how adding a barrel would make a difference to racking the action. I would also pop the trigger group out as suggested and see how the action feels with the barrel.

Well yeah thats the thing, I dont see how adding the barrel effects it either. +1 though for trying the barrel without the trigger assembly. Ill also look at the action bars etc. again as suggested. Its just d*** wierd.

I've had sticking when the lifter (raises shells into the chamber from below) is pushed up into the receiver.

There are some small magical parts in the trigger assembly (Never striped mine down, small parts scare me. ) If all operates smoothly without the trigger assembly installed I'd look to something there being an issue.

The barrel holds the action bar assembly in the correct place, not flopping around as when the barrel is off.

The latches may pop loose from their staking if the trigger group is out and you cycle the action.

I asked a friend with an 870 if he ever had the problem and he said once, and that he took the trigger assembly out and made sure it was clean, then put it back together and it worked. He wasn't sure what he actually did to fix it, but it worked....

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

This is just a guess, but it sounds like the fore end is not centered on the fore end tube. The plastic ones do this more than the wood ones. I guess they slip easier. Loosen the nut on the end of the tube, make sure the the fore end is not twisted, even a little, to either side and tighten the nut again. When the fore end is off center it rubs against the barrel.
