Stock bedding?

I am new to the precision rifle obsession and am awaiting my 700 to get it going.
I am looking into a mcm a5 and after creeping around here I've read a lot about stock bedding and such but I still don't know really what it is/does.
Can anyone explain to me what the process is and why it is beneficial and such?
And if it is worth it to do when I am just getting into the precision rifle addiction.
