    Recommendations for AK-smith

I'm having trouble finding a real AK-smith still doing business. It seems like all the big "AK builders" are little more than riveters and painters. If I had the time to demill the whole kit, and supply all the parts, I might as well just rivet it and refinish it myself. So I'm looking for someone who can take an AK or a parts kit with ALL parts supplied by me, and return to me a completed gun.

Before it's suggested I should mention that I don't have the time to build my kits myself (as much as I want to I really don't have any free time - hell my Calguns time is down to probably an hour a week now). Also, I need some things done that just can't be done at a build party. So I really need someone who knows what they are doing but aren't afraid to actual WORK as opposed to wanting the entire gun preped for them.

I was originally going to use Turbothis from theAKforum, but it appears he recently got married and moved to Canada, so building guns for me is not possible anymore. I tried googling and searching several forums (including theAKforum), but 99% of everything returned is AK-builder.com talk or DIYs/Tutorials and doesn't help me.

Some of the things I need done:
    • Russian type II reweld.
    • Maadi RPMS' barrel cut down to 16", rethreaded, front sight installed, probably have the rear trunion removed and re-installed because of rivet stretching/setback (carrier jumps rails on a full mag), and refinish.
    • Underfolder kit installed on a NodakSpud receiver without underfolder holes cut.
    • Romanian PSL
    • Virgin barrel build

There are a dozen or so others, but those are the more unique ones. I've also got several kits, like one of the few M95 kits, that I want to make sure gets to a professional - more for investment integrity. Home built AKs just don't hold their value like an AK built by a known builder. I don't mind sending each one to a different person if they specialize in one type but not others (like rewelders), so long as it gets done professionally.

    Any suggestions?

If you are in the sacramento area bring them by Norse Armory all that stuff except re-welding milled receivers we do regularly, we usually just use new milled receivers on our milled builds.

I can do all that but the reweld. I can weld and I'm not afraid of doing it, but I'd rather make mistakes on my own kit first before attempting to build a customers kit.

Did you call him? He's still listing building services on GunBroker and is shipping out of Oregon.

Turbo This! He's great, and still doing business. He's working on my AMD pistol Russian fsb/gas project. He spent the time to open up a new gas port in small increments, where it dumps brass effectively but not into the next galaxy. Great guy and prices are honest and reasonable.

Didn't know he was moving to Canada?... Better get my projects to him fast!!

Post up some pics when your done. Matt's a great guy.

                  I blame Calguns...

I wasn't at home when I last read this and my email is setup on my home computer. Needless to say, I decided to email Turbothis (as he was my prefered choice to do the reweld) as soon as I got home. I figured in the mean time head on over to Gunbroker and see if I couldn't find a decent type III top cover. Low and behold, what pops out, but a very nice complete and matching Hungarian type III kit with original barrel for $425 shipped. Oh well, guess my reweld will have to wait another couple weeks while I re-save... unless my itch continues and I grab those two other AK kits I was looking at...

Maybe someone can answer this, I've got a Saiga I worked on and wanted to replace the smooth top cover for a ribbed one. Is there any difference between the smooth Saiga top cover and a type III milled top cover? I haven't measured my kits but I THOUGHT milled receivers were slightly wider. Anyone know for sure?

I could have sworn I read it! I swear it was on the AK forum and I THOUGHT it was your T1 build thread. Watch, I'll spend hours looking for it, give up, then stumble across it two years later only to realize it's no longer relevant or I missunderstood, and it will all be for nothing.

Either way, I'm glad it's not true. It gives me time to invest in MORE kits.

I swear I'm not greedy, but I did feel a little that way when Matt told me "Oh boy, you have a lot on your plate." Of course I took that as a "Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! This is going to be fun!"...at least that's what I'm telling myself.
