    I could be off base on this, but I assume you had a barrel nut tool on the nut and your wrench in the square hole on the tool. If so, you are creating a lever and multiplying the actual torque reading on your wrench.

    Does that make sense? You aren't torquing directly on the nut, you are applying force an inch or so away, thus multiplying the torque.
