    Mods & bead blasting a 1911

So I bought this RIA in order to learn some gunsmithing. So far I've changed out the sights (it had the fixed mil-spec sights that I could barely see), and added some Ed Brown products - grip safety, thumb safety, magazine release, hammer, sear spring. Oh, also some cheapie grips.

What are some other mods that would be a good next step? Would an aftermarket barrel make a big difference? I was thinking about trying a FLGR to see what the difference was like, and maybe next the trigger/sear. Also maybe a drop-in maxiwell, but not sure if I like how that will change the looks of the gun.

Lastly, when it comes time to finish it up, I really like how bead blasting makes the gun look. Can you just bead blast the surface and leave it? Or does it need a coating to protect it? I'd like to try a 2-tone finish where either the frame or the slide is bead blasted and the safeties/slide release are the opposite for some contrast.

Anyway, for a cheap 1911 I've been pretty happy with this RIA and how the mods have gone - took it out to the range after performing these mods and it functioned perfectly...loving how much better it is to shoot with the sights and the beavertail especially.

If you are talking about a match after market barrel, properly fitted it should do wonders in the accuracy department.
Bead blasting a carbon steel gun, will expose the bare metal to rusting. You can satin hardchrome the pieces you would like to have the bead blast look, this will give them a very durable finish, and you can black oxide (blueing) the other pieces to give your pistol that two tone look, or any other type of black finish. Good luck.

Get a schuemann barrel with a matched bushing and find a good gunsmith to install it. You will love it I promise..
