S&W Rear Sight Kit advice

Yesterday I went to Clark County Shooting Park and took out my Model 17 Smith and -- My rear sight blade is busted. The kit to fix it is less than $20 from Brownells or Midway, so I guess I've got to order one. I read comments and instruction for the kit. It looks like you remove the entire sight from the pistol, break the screw by unscrewing it, catch the other parts and reassemble using the new parts.

How do I know which width (.126 or .146) to buy? My front sight measure ~.125" Barrel is 6"

Anyone ever had to replace one of these? Helpful advice would be appreciated.

I believe the blade widths are the same, its the heights that are different. Take your caliper and measure the blade height at it's tallest point (not including the tab that the screw goes through) this will tell you which blade you'll need. You will need to get a "staking" tool, and a little spanner bit to finish the job correctly. Make sure you get a new spring and plunger also. It's almost impossible to not lose those little parts when taking it apart. HTH c good

Good info from c good. The kit should include the spring and plunger IIRC. Leave the sight on the gun, it's easier that way. Use a small flat bladed screwdriver for the staking punch, or build a punch. Look at the old nut to see how it is staked to the screw. Use a dab of grease to hold the spring and plunger in the screw head.
