First I want to thank everyone who helped me get this thing put together. Tujungatoes and 69Mach1 especially for the use of their gear and knowledge.
Toes has been badgering me for a while now to do an ak build, so when centerfire's PSL kits went on sale I ordered one. I was surprised to get an almost new matching kit. Centerfire took their time shipping the receiver and after almost a week with out a tracking number I began to think they were not going to sell to me. A few calls and almost another week later, and it was on the way. With all the parts in hand I began to think about customization options. I wanted to leave the bayo lug and muzzle threads alone as well as fix the length of pull, so a tapco trigger set and US furniture were a must to keep it compliant and make it fit my long arms. I also decided that I wanted more then a 4x pso scope. A few weeks later I ordered a 8X42 posp and a Rhineland arms tiger maple stock set.
I fitted as much as I could before assembly. The rails went easy, but the scope base and trigger hole needed quite a bit of material removed. After lots of careful filing and dremel work everything fell into place. I finished the stock with a custom blend of trans tint dyes followed by a couple of coats of gel stain and linseed oil, topped off with half a dozen coats of paste wax. The barrel was installed using a method Toes found in the forums here. It consisted of a barrel vise made from a 1 inch aluminum plate cross drilled for bolts and center drilled with a 3/4 bit. The plate was then cut in half and clamped around the fat section of the barrel very near the rear sight block. We pressed on the vise with a chunk of 2" aluminum pipe that I cut a slot in to clear the sight and gas block. It took some time to get the barrel pin to line up but the jig worked great and removed the possibility of bending the barrel. once final assembly was done I just had to do one last fitting on all the parts and touch up the finish damaged during the build. The scope was sighted in using the iron sights and more fitting was required to get the scope right. a little more filing and a shim and it was ready to test fire. It all paid off when that first shot went down range and rang the steel at 100 yards. I will post a full range report after my next trip out. I did some trigger work on it after the test fire. I expect it to group fairly well once I get some more time in with it.
I am very pleased with the way it came out and had a blast putting it together. Now all I have to do is figure out what to build next.
