    ak headspacing questions

alright so i've gotten to this point in my builds and I'm having some trouble. I have an all matching numbers original barrel amd-65 kit that I pushed the barrel in to where the barrel pin hole lines up with the hole in the trunnion, but the bolt does not close entirely without some force on a go-gauge, but closes entirely on a round with no force at all. So after discovering this I decided to try the gauges on my saiga as a control, and the bolt is even farther from closing on the go gauge then it was on the amd. I've fired 1200+ rounds from the saiga without a single hiccup so its hard for me to believe that the headspacing could be off on this. Is this a problem with the gauges or am I doing something wrong? Also while headspacing my egyptian kit I got the bolt to close almost completely on the go gauge, not closing on the no-go, and closing completely on rounds. I'm talking like just BARELY being able to slide a piece of paper in between the edge of the bolt and trunnion, but still a small visible gap, at least to me. I pushed the barrel out slightly, and now it closes completely on the go gauge and on the no-go, so I have to push it back in a little bit, but is that small of a gap ok? It seems as though the go gauge just wont close entirely on anything like the bolt closes on a round unless the barrel is pushed out way too far. Advice or help please? I can post pics if needed, and yes the bolt face and chamber has been completely clean on all of these. Thanks in advance.

It should take a little force to get the bolt to close on the go gauge, about 30lbs IIRC

good to know, in that case ill just use the amd as judging what the others should be at....any input as to why the saiga was so far off from closing on the go gauge?

Which gauges are you using? If you're using SAMMI gauges forget about the go. the chambers in the original barrels are cut to CIP specs.

The CIP gauges can be ordered from Brownells, not sure if the gauges Curtis has at AKbuilder are CIP or not.

Sounds like you have perfect headspace on your amd.. 65 to me.. If it closes with a little bit of force on the go gauge that is good.. After you fire it for the first time it should settle a little bit it will open up the HS about one thousandth and should be good to go.. most Ak's will run great with loose headspace.. but if it is too tight it will not run.. So don't worry if it closes on live rounds and doesn't close on the No go it is good to go.. B2B
