    how to remove anodizing?

is there a way to remove anodized finishes without just grinding the crap out of it? chemical process maybe, or some sort of polishing?

    Bead blast.
There are 3 kinds of people in this world.
The wise, learn from the mistakes of others.
The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

Anything that is extremely alkaline will remove it. Oven cleaner is an easy one to find and use. Lye will also do it.

A chemical bath like TS suggest will make it go bye bye quick.

I always bead blast. If I'm removing the ano, it's because I'm machining it, after which, it gets bead blasted anyway.

If you're looking to get it reanodized a different color (and the finish is good) just have the ano shop do it. They can strip it, etch, then ano, all in about the same time it takes to get it back if you just ano.

the anodizing is bonded with the aluminum on the molecular level its not just a paint or dye. if mek takes it off something is wrong with the anodizing.

a sodium hydroxide(aka lye) solution is a very effective way of taking it off. the anodizing kit i got came with a big bag of it for that exact reason.

                Agreed!
If you are going to re-anodize and want your work to really stand out, polish the alum before sending out for anodizing.

Draino is the cheapest method but takes patience.

                      This info is 100% correct.

It would be good to clean the part(s) with M.E.K or acetone to remove any gunk, oil, grease, ECT..

The aluminum will be dark grey-black after etching off the ano with the sodium hydroxide (lye).

If you then dip the part into an acidic solution after etching off the ano, it will remove the grey/black film. you MUST rinse off ALL of the lye before the acid process!!!
