ive been reading up a great deal on how to build an AK from the ground up. i enjoy it very much and hope to build one within the next few months. what i dont understand is how it gets registered or whatever, whats the legality? for those that are confused im talking about the AK flats.

You can register it if you want to. Just fill out a voluntary registration form and send it in. But, there is nothing requiring you to do so. Also, you're right on the other side of the hill from me. When you're ready to build, just let me know. I'm sure we can work something out.

There is no legal requirement to register any long gun.
There is no legal requirement to register any handgun that is homebuilt.
There are periods at the end of those sentences.


You MAY voluntarily register your homebuilt handgun, but the only reason to do this would be if you wish to add it to your CCW.
Other than that, there are felony enhancements for being in possession of a handgun "not registered to you" if you are committing certain crimes.

Should you later decide to sell your handgun, it will be registered to the buyer at that time.

You MAY also voluntarily register any long gun that you own, but the only reason to do so would be the slim possibility that should the gun be stolen while you are on vacation, and the police recover it before you discover the loss, it could be traced back to you.

thanks fellas, that helps plenty. now i can start looking into buying what i would look to get for my build slowly. since i already purchased a mini 30, my gf wont to be happy if i got another one started. she already threatened to leave if i bought another one this year. lol.

Building is not the same process as buying. I suspect your gf never mentioned anything about building, so in your defense, she needs to learn to be more specific. If she decides to leave anyway, then she has saved you from a lifetime of having to live with a giant party-pooper.

You guys are right, she didn't specifically say I couldn't build one. O well, if she does decide to leave ill medicate my sorrow with more guns and plenty of booze.
